Charlie Parker was born on August 29, 1920. he died on March 12, 1955. He played the saxophone and was a successful composer. Parker was an icon when it came to bebop. Parker was born in Kansas City, Kansas, however he was raised in Kansas City, Missouri. Young Charlie picked up a saxophone at age eleven and then joined the school band at age fourteen. Charlie’s father was not always around, but when he was he often provided a musical influence on Charlie.

Thought the thirties, Charlie mastered improvising and sparked some ideas that lead to bebop. At one point in his life for about three to four years Charlie practiced for fifteen hours a day! In 1938 Parker joined the Jay McShann’s territory band. Charlie later made his pro recording debut with that same band. Charlie toured a lot with the band, they went to Chicago, New York, and more.
